Technology Bitch

So I got behind on all my blogs, thanks to Norton Fing Virus software. See, I didn't see the sense in renewing my subscription for 50.00 a year. I was looking for another software to replace (which I found for free by the way, and found an amazing number of virus and spy ware that friggin Norton never found). In the meantime, what I didn't realize is that when you don't renew, Norton (on it's own by the way) ramps up your firewall.

So the next thing I know, Microsoft is mentioning the firewall and a subscription to their service (but not the fact that your actual virus software may be Fing with you). Took my computer administrator (aka husband), who has a day job by the way, to figure this out in his "spare time".

So I can't get rid of Windows or Microsoft products, but I sure don't need my virus software screwing with me. (bye bye Norton)

Greed, Corporations, Countries, Politics

In business, the complete disregard for human life astounds me over and over again. Robert and I were watching a special the other day on the "Don't Snitch" culture taking hold. First of all, the rappers who are wearing huge diamond studs in their ears, own multiple Lamborghinis, talk about this business of not "snitching" on people that commit murder and other heinous crimes with such ease. Then they are selling this same attitude to their fans. Just in a community, what a horrible way to live. These are people saying if their neighbor was killed in front of them, and they knew who did it, they wouldn't "snitch". That's scary and bad enough, but it makes me absolutely ill when someone admits that they are doing it for business reasons (IE yet more money and material things after already being well off) only that makes my skin crawl.

Look at what is happening in China. Just one more thing happened recently where a toy manufacturer committed suicide after his toys were blocked from export due to high levels of paint from a supplier that he trusted, and was his close friend (supposedly). I am not blaming the Chinese companies by the way, it is us. Our greed for cheap labor, cheap product, cheaper than it could possibly be manufactured and then need to ship over at a certain price point from third world countries is the cause of it. Shame on the greedy American corporations, and I am not kidding. I have seen it happen over and over again, and this is just the tip of the fall out on what will happen. How many people have died, become ill, become mentally damaged due to these things being distributed already?
In my mind, that is JUST as evil as being a serial killer. It is in essence being a serial killer over the great green dollar. Very sad what some people will stupe to for a little profit.

Kids as The Corporate Excuse

You know, awhile ago it occurred to me....

My husband is facing that corporate dilema right now. Corporations know where their free labor is, and instead of paying the hourly labor overtime, they make up "work parties" where salaried people come in and do a bunch of work. It's pretty blatant.

So while I was trying to decide whether to work in the corporate world until my business got started, I fully had decided to make up "kids". Robert and Rebecca would be our cute little tots to whom I had to go home to each night. They would have school events I couldn't miss et et.

I realize now that I forgot to share this plan with my husband so he could use it. I hate corporate America!! Probably too late now to share with his co-workers that he has kids. Hey maybe his "first marriage" wife gets killed, and we need to take care of the those kids?

Pyramid Marketing Schemes Et Al

Ugh, a lady stopped me at the post office one day before Christmas. She saw that I was a dog trainer, and she was a distributor of something pet related. She wondered if she could talk to me about it at some future date.

I am already thinking, wow this is going to be a huge waste of my time. However, I really admire the chutzpah it takes to get out there and do it for yourself. So I said sure. In January, she called again and wanted to meet with me right then and there. I politely declined as I had appointments that I had scheduled with clients in advance, let her know when I was available. She declined to make an appointment at that time or call back after my busy time had slowed down.

So two weeks ago, I get a call from her business associate who wasn't sure how I had "fallen through the cracks". Getting annoyed but figure, hey if it only takes a half hour or so of my time, why not have them make their sales pitch. Maybe they do carry something I would be interested in. I am thinking that they are concentrated in the pet care industry.

So we make the appointment. She calls back and leaves a message five minutes later that she is unable to make the appointment. Sigh. I don't bother to call back, as I figure it's on her to waste her time tracking me down rather than waste my time further. So when she calls back, she has a time and date that she is free on. We agree to meet at my house.

They get here a bit late. We wait for the laptop to fire up (why I don't know we never used it). Then they tell me they are working for Market America. Ick, can you say Amway pyramid scheme (not actually Amway, but you get the idea). They have products produced cheaply in Hong Kong that they are thinking I have the time and energy (and lack of ethics) to hawk onto my trusting pet owning clientele. Of course before this, I am entertained with stories on how ill conceived pet adoptions went horribly wrong, and euthanasia of animals. Best was when they saw my dogs in the door and shuddered. Here's a really good way to start a sales pitch with a pet professional.

Oh, and anytime someone says (unprompted) "of course your realize this is not a multi level marketing company but an unfranchise", course it's a multi level marketing company. They just wish this wasn't so.

Wow, any way, I now regret my generous nature in such things. HOWEVER, an evil and genius thought crept into my brain. You see we get to the pushy part where I have made it abundantly clear that I have ZERO interest in what they have to offer (in the most polite way of course). Then they say something like "okay then, who do you know that we can call on" blah blah blah blah. Like I would subject someone to that. So I say, "you know I just moved to the area, and don't know anyone really." THEY "oh, where did you move from?" ME "Worcester Mass". THEY "Oh, we are based in Mass too, who do you know there?" I'm thinking at that point.....I wouldn't subject my worst en-------now wait a minute BA the monster!!! I didn't do it, but you would have to agree of the evil genius of sending someone like that to her. And you would just have to imagine what an evil viper of a real estate agent she is to get the complete picture of the evil genius of this idea. Course, they weren't good and obnoxious enough to sick on her in the end so I didn't.

I do occasionally send out her e-mail to porno and spam sites though .

Freaky Fridays

Fridays for me aren't like the rest of the working world. They could be quiet or busy. In fact, for reasons I don't understand, I hardly get any requests for training on the days Friday thru Sunday as one might expect. I never have. While working, I would have thought this is a great time to train in a lesson. I guess that is how much of a chore dog training appears to be to people.

This Friday is going to be the sending out of the tax information. Yes, there will be a ticker tape parade and confetti. Keep in mind, my previous career was as an accountant, so the passing on of any control (and little will be left to the poor guys imagination) at all has been hard on me. Once it's done though, it should just be easier every year. And now I don't need to spend hours hunting down the every moving legal tide of the IRS to figure out what is and what is not acceptable at this very moment. This is especially important as I don't buy the incredibly expensive and specialized computer programs that attempt to make this a bit easier on accountants and their clients. Impossible in the quagmire I say, impossible.

On the other hand, my accountant will probably want to kiss me for not being one of the many that slams a shoe box filled with every correspondence for the year as "tax information" never mind complete tax information. You know, with a few out there questions of course. That is nothing though, trust me. He is well prepared.

I have never looked more forward to sending out a package in my life.

It's different when you are a professional doing other peoples taxes. There was a period in time, believe it or not, that I loved doing this. It was like being paid to complete a maze or puzzle every day. At KBKF they were tough too. Very nice guys, but very perfectionist. That was amazing training for me. In that world, which I have left behind these last three years LOL.

A lot of the stuff has transitioned over to allow me to better able market my dog training business even with my sucky marketing skills. Database applications, web site development, computer knowledge in general, the ability to be quite creative and forward thinking with finances.

Now is the other training for the both of us. How to be independent and survive without necessarily relying on the corporate world.

The Most Dysfunctional Family You Can Have-Corporate America

Husband has secured employment with a new company. Basically happened in an hour, but we hadn't gotten the offer as yet. Nevertheless, have you seen what the market conditions of my husband's industry have done to the stock in one day. Holy Fuck!!! Last time it dipped, it was blaming China now it's blaming this industry for that too.

It's such a moronic thing that every subprime mortgage lender decided to FINALLY take action on the same day. Oh that's not going to cause a panicked stampede. You gotta love it. Oh, it's a real thing that these companies are eating their losses due to past "successful" sales to people with less than stellar credit. Duh!! However, there is a market for that, you just have to work it correctly. Like anything else.

Half of what happens in the stock market (no make that more than half) is never the reality of the situation, but the perception of the reality of the situation. It kills me how one person's article can make the stock bounce for that day. Then the next day a different article comes out and it bounces the other way. The best is when another company in the same industry does something illegal, and all their competitors stocks go down more.

So my husband's new position will be in the same industry. That's sort of a shame, but it could be a plus. In that every other company has pulled out, they are the one company in the area that COULD rebuild and get the few products remaining to lending brokers. This company just got their license in the area where everyone pulled out. Soooooo.......wouldn't be such a good idea to pull out just as it's getting interesting.

We will see as usual. Trying to finesse out of dipping into our retirement savings. Bet this will be the theme for the rest of the year:)

Me, I took 8 hours to file last year's work and get more organized on taxes.

What Gets Me Through All These Times

The Federal Trade Building was bombed when I was 25. I thought that was the worst thing I would ever see.

When I was 34-35, 9/11 hit and the World Trade Center went down. I was sure that now that would be the worst thing I ever saw (including the aftermath and war).

Around this time about two years ago, the Tsunami hit. Now I hope that was the worst thing I would ever know about.

Those things made me change some things about my life, and one of the most important changes was my career. Being a controller was not my childhood dream. Numbers and finances are just something that I happen to be good at. I never aspired to be part of a large corporation. With the corruption (Enron, Worldcomm, and don't think it doesn't happen in almost every corporation) the job became even more unbearable being in my position. You need to choose to either help people break the law, or have those people out for you every day as you do your job. Not so fullfilling. Especially when the Vice President calls you on the day that a large layoff is happening, someone came to work with a gun, and he wants to be sure that his corporate Lincoln Town Car is exactly hundred dollars more than his rivals.

That wasn't even my last bad corporate job. Besides saying enough to certain family members, the other thing I changed is becoming my own boss working with beings that I love, dogs and their owners. Here is my client, Roxy, enjoying a walk on the beach with me.

Life is good.

Stress and icy Pit of Despair

I was hear at this place many times when I was in my early 20s. Recently, I have escaped the corporate American hollowly that is the American dream. Yeah, right, nightmare.

Then it was mergers, acquisitions, was I doing my job well enough to keep it? It was a horrible time, I remember a time in 1989 where I was in tears because my car had died. No, tears is not a good enough word, gut wrenching sobs inspired by true panic over the situation where my only source of transportation was dead. My income relied on that car. Obviously, this was all eventually overcome on our own resources,

Now I am growing a business, but have not been working on it as hard as I should certaintly not hard enough to start socking money away for the onset of disaster.

Not to mention that I don't have a real support system of close friends or family (except my husband). So there you are, fifty stories in the air and looking down. There is no net in sight. Okay that might be a slight exaggeration, there are savings and ways that I would rather not use to tap into other available sources of $$$$s to keep this roof over our head.

What happened? Robert's job is again in jeopardy. An internal audit has been done, and actually many are in jeopardy in Robert's company. Of course, this all happened as he was traveling to Colorado (this may have been luck, we will see tomorrow), and his father was in the hospital for hip surgery. The stress and worry over his father and this, have sent Robert home early in the middle of the project. It also allowed for others to report back to him the scope and scale of what was happening. That's the only good thing that has happened.

The problem is a few procedures that have been encouraged by the higher ups to increase sales, are now being used to potentially fire (and I think close the branch with as little severance pay as possible) many employees, especially the managers. This does not bode well to me.

Unfortunately, we have just taken on a mortgage that is .....Higher than normal. Granted it is paid into the future, and now I am trying to figure out just how to pay it more into the future. We have our tenants that aren't going anywhere soon, which is lucky. The dog training business has been doing well, though I should have been doing more marketing et during this time, instead of taking it easy and enjoying life. Ugh.

We do have our retirement savings, which we can cash in if we need to. It goes without saying, I would rather avoid that. Plus if we do that, there goes our safety net. Oh, yes, there is the loss of health insurance, that my husband at least needs. We will probably need to keep it just to cover his prescription costs anyway. So if Monday comes, and Robert comes home for awhile, instead of concentrating on growing the business, I am going to need to recalculate our future success rate with all of that.

Yeah, a bit stressed out. Not to mention my three dogs and one cat that I can't let anything happen to.

Corporate Slaves/My other Blog Service Down

Watching my husband charter through the waters of corporate America lately. Ugh. I have been reading the book The Cheating Culture, and it so nails what happens in corporate America. Although I have to disagree with the books "price gouging" definition, if your customers know what they are paying and they have picked you, then that is not gouging. As a service professional the overall price may be well worth it, and I don't think the books author took into consideration, salary of personell doing menial work (benefits, taxes, space, equipment rental, office supplies) et et. Whether that fee comes in an increased per hour fee, or a per item of menial faxing, mailing et, does not matter IMO. That is as long as it is disclosed on billing and is accurate.

Any way, the hubby is off traveling in CA right now, and recently got back from CAN. He is stuck on the flight they pick (what do they care if there are 8 transfers), hotels they pick, cars they may or may not rent (held hostage during off hours), where when and with whom you eat, and on and on. I managed to weasle out of all trips, except two that I wanted to go on. One to San Fransisco, and one to Boston. Both times, I managed to get agreement that my husband came along LOL. But I had learned a lot of hard lessons, before being able to mold things to my way. It's also very helpful if you are invaluable, and no one wants to learn never mind do the work you are doing.

I guess that is what Robert is trying to accomplish, since he volunteered for this training/presentation additional duties. I say they will just try to push him harder.....faster.....more. That's what I found in the corporate world, the more you put in, the more they expect from you. The less others put in, the more time off they get with the same pay and benefits as you. If anything, you may be expected to take a position higher than you at the same pay. I said no to that one in Butchers co. Wonder how all those crooks are doing these days. Yuck. S C Johnson so sucks as a corporation (that's who bought and dismantled Butcher's despite their promises not to). They were soooo suprised when I told them flat out, I wasn't moving to Wisconsin, and even assuming their corp was right here, there was no way I was working for them. Still makes me ill thinking of that corporation.

Synergy Blues/Sell House Sell

Husband's company is busy laying people off, and reorganizing. Oh goody. Didn't win megamillions last night, or powerball last week, so that strategy won't work. Husband seems to be coming out on the good side of the employee complaint to HR. Employee is digging self in deeper and deeper, and has done this sort of thing before. Hopefully, husband's job is safe from this and the layoffs for at least the time being. His bosses seem very much behind him.To make matters worse, our house for sale was supposed to close on the 17th but the buyer pulled out. Now she's back, but I want to nail her to the wall this time. I don't want her wasting our time and money right now. It's on the market for a good deal.Oh well, good to vent my blues, and noone is reading any way. Depressing blog this one.

Old Post Regarding Telecast Fiber Systems

I am the Controller at a high tech company. Nude posters, pictures of nude playing cards, offensive tee-shirts, and sexist/sexual remarks from the President down to assembly workers have always been a part of the atmosphere. My female co-workers and I always laughed it off and joked about what ignorant men they were. Eventually we got the posters and other pictures down.During this whole period of time, there has always been a certain mind set about the male vs female employees. The females are relied heavily on to run the place, bullied into putting in long hours, and always expected to pick up the males slack.

For instance I am also the human resources person and the accounting clerk. "Why is it that you need an accounting clerk anyways, what is it you do all day long?" I didn't accept the Human Resources Position at all and was never told I would need to take on accounting clerk responsibilities either. But I did, and other female employees also rolled up their sleeves for the good of the company. I spent several nights there all day long getting the daily work in and finalizing financial statements. The men enjoyed vacation time without having to report it(so vacation days just remain accrued), days starting at 9 and ending at 3, two hours worth of cigarette breaks out on the dock, higher pay structures, and a relatively stress free job.

Additionally, our purchasing agent, who had always gone along with the sexual jokes and innuendos and tolerated having lewd rumors about herself, started having enough. She tolerated it before because purchasing agents are sales people. You have to put up with this kind of thing from vendors sometimes to make good deals. Well she had had enough and things started getting bad for her.Our production manager began to get sick of working long hours so the sales staff (order takers really) could make their commissions early and take off for their golf game or their Cape Cod house. I only Thank God she didn't know how much they were making in just base salary never mind commissions. I unfortunately knew however and I also knew that an employee under her supervision was making more than her, that employees under her had received 40% raises more than once in a year, and that she hadn't received a raise since before I came 1/97. I heard the abuse she put up with but was assuming initially that this was just the way her and the managers got along. I was assuming at this point this was ok with both of them.

I myself had put up with sexual comments and verbal sexual abuse from the Vice President and our President, the Sexual Harassment Officer by the way, but had laughed it up to this point and thought they were just harmless stupid men that if confronted would be very contrite and sorry. I was very well paid because when the corporation was going bankrupt under the management of the CFO, the President finally understood what it was I did and recognized I'd been warning him all along. I already had three jobs lined up, and gave him an agreement to sign before I would stay. I have had several previous jobs to this the most recent being five years in a CPA firm. However, I have worked for many other different types of companies, and have relatively been treated like gold. I had never experienced what came before my complaint or after before. I had never believed that any man could be as ignorant and small mind as the men that work in my company. If anything, I always worked for men who I could find no fault with in this regard and if they made jokes involving sexual conduct, I always knew I was respected and liked. If I had ever felt offended, they would drop it immediately and apologize. Not the case here.

Workers began coming to me with their complaints and stories regarding sexual harassment and verbal abuse. Tensions began mounting at an alarming rate. I was realizing my female employees did not feel comfortable with their treatment. They did not feel they could go to their sexual harassment officer with their complaints as he is the one sitting there all day looking at porno on the internet and they told me he would only shoot them down and make their life miserable. Finally, I heard a sexually explicit remark about a female employee. That this male employee would practically shout this out in a public place was not necessarily new, but I had never actually been in the pressence before. I had my reasons having to do with a claim of rape being rumored around the company for not confronting this employee. So I marched myself upstairs, and went into the president/sexual harrassment officer's office. Previously I had thought he was ignorant, sexist, and abusive but deep deep down basically a decent human being. In retrospect, I can see what a demented perspective that was. He basically said "boys will be boys" and implied these issues are non-productive so I am not doing anything about it. Going in I had thought he would simply say "ok that's unacceptable, I'll get right on it". I was under the delusion that I would bring this to his attention, he would apologize, and merit out a warning maybe even just verbally. This response, however, prompted me to say fine, but I'm documenting this formal complaint I've filed with you and I am documenting every instance of sexual harassment I witness and that comes to my attention from now on. He basically said fine you go and do that then. Clearly he did not think I would.

A few minutes later my documented understanding of the conversation was e-mailed to him. He not only e-mailed me back that my action was intolerable (thank you jerk), but he came into my office all red faced in front of a female employee who unfortunately left. He also told me that in order to combat this sexual harassment he is going to stop all conversations between employees like (he specifically said) me and Patty, because that could be construed as sexual harassment. This new ruling was never mentioned to any other employee and certaintly not to any male employee. The Vice President took time out to tell me that the President tells him everything, and mentioned this to him. How he resented being forced to confront an employee on any issue. I did not take this as a sign of support.A male employee came in shortly thereafter with an offensive tee-shirt on. The production manager suggested that he may want to change it because of the atmosphere recently and because of course it was inappropriate. This employee took a hissy fit, said he quit, and left the building. He came back with a different tee-shirt on but left about five minutes later. The production manager received the dressing down from the president. He implied she only did this because she was friends with the purchasing manager who was having similar problems to every other female employee and had talked about them with the president. He also implied she had no right to do this. I was later told to pay the employee with the inappropriate tee-shirt with a sick day to compensate him. The purchasing manager having had enough, found another job (at much less pay just to leave), and quit. The employee that I filed the sexual harassment complaint against, and who could never do the job he had, became not just purchasing agent but materials manager. The production manager became upset at this and would not cooperate with this person. A meeting was called between the production manager, the Vice President, and the new Materials Manager. They asked her why she had a problem dealing with this person. She answered that he never did any work, this was a very important position and he was not qualified, and that he had made sexually offensive comments. The Vice President replied "is that like when the (purchasing manager) sat on (the sales vice presidents) lap with no pants on". An arguement consisting of all types of inappropriate statements from the Vice President ensued. The production manager called in sick the next day and told me of this conversation. I informed the Vice President that I needed to see the President immediately that day.

The President/Sexual Harassment Officer came into my office and replied immediately to that statement, "well what's the problem, it's true." By the by, not that it matters, both parties slandered in that statement verify that it's not true. No employee can come forward or be named who "witnessed" this pantsless lap sitting action. The purchasing agent, who had given her notice by this time, shortened her exit time when she learned of this. Well with that response, I began listing some of my earlier statements of sexual discrimination in the workplace. Some of them having been discussed with the President before. To these he responded that the production manager and the purchasing agent were uneducated, gained all their experience from him, and he did not charge them tuition for that experience. The production manager has a phd and the purchasing agent has her bachelors plus fifteen years of purchasing experience. Both of them have wasted considerable time and effort with this company, and our being punished in ways they don't even know about. We discussed the President's sexually demeaning remarks to me (something he does not make the mistake of doing as often to me), and he began saying "I just used that word to illistrate a point. I know I used that word in our discussion, but I didn't mean I had actually used that word in discussing you with other employees ect". Yeah Right!!!! He also said basically that the men are not required to work as hard because they have special knowledge. Special knowledge apparantly only the President can grasp and understand and this gives them special priviledges. Like additional vacation time without reporting it, higher wages, more frequent reviews, .... That just because employees worked under a female, did not mean that female should make more. Then he told me we should stop the conversation because it was an "emotional" one for me. I said it really wasn't, but did he feel it was "emotional" for me because I was a woman?

Later that day the President apologized and asked me to forget the conversation we had. My complaint to the Mass Commission Against Discrimination was already under way. The production manager quit the next day, and I submitted my complaint to the sexual harassment officer right after. I certified mailed this complaint to the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination the next day. Imagine my suprise the next morning when I saw a letter accepting my resignation (I had never given) on my desk, saying he was "sorry to be loosing a valuable employee and valuable member of the team", and his ill conceiled snide remark about the contract not being entirely legal. (thanks again jerk) I had contacted a lawyer the previous day for consulting my rights should anything like this happen before sending my letter certified mail. We really didn't think they would be stupid enough to pull this the next day. I had explained to this lawyer that I was not intending to sue them for money, I really only wanted the investigation to possibly protect the few women left. I also felt the weight of responsibility being the Human Resources person and not having put my foot down earlier. The fact that I never accepted this position had no bearing on my conscience at this point.

When I submitted my e-mail explaining that he could not accept a resignation that he had not given and would have to honor the terms of our contract, He e-mailed me back that I had definately quit, of course he was going to honor the terms, and in now way was his "accepting my departure" a reflection upon my complaint. What is ironic, was that morning I was going to thank him for not being hostile after I gave him the complaint. A simple apology and agreement that he would turn the duty over of sexual harassment officer to someone else, would have probably gotten me never to go on the inteview for the complaint. Now I am seeing red. Then came the meeting where he baggered me about the sexual harassment complaint and tried to debate it. I basically told him it was filed with the MACD because I felt he was negligent in his duties, I would not speak to him nor his lawyers about any issue, and that he would have to wait and debate it with the MACD. He continued to bagger me about just what behaviour I was talking about, that he couldn't understand my letter, that he had forwarded it to his attorney's. I told him again he would have to wait. He then told me that my obvious hostile attitude would have to be dealt with. I asked what hostile attitude. He said my refusal to discuss this. I explained it was all previously discussed, in writing on his desk, in the English language, and it was now my legal right to not discuss it with him. He continued, and I proceeded to sit in silence. After five minutes of silence, I asked if there was anything else I could help him with today.

He began questioning why financial statements weren't produced (this after I had speant 59-60 hour weeks helping him with an IRS audit while doing the year end workpapers and saving the company $80,000)and then (God Forbid) took a much needed vacation, that I was no longer trustworthy (were that true the IRS would have their $80,000), and that an add is going in the Boston Globe on 8/9/98 for a controller for this company. (All who apply watch out!!!!!!)He became beligerant and argumentative as I explained that my over work load has not allowed me to do this, but if he would give me a list of his priorities. I will give him a list of what will not be accomplished and he can divy up the work in writing to me with timelines ect. Finally the conversation which he said "has nothing to do with your complaint and I welcome the opportunity to address it" was over.My husband says he proud of me for taking a stand in what I believe in. I just hope they will eventually learn their lesson.
